Tarka dal

After doing a guess work on tarka dal (but nevertheless v.v.yummy!), I finally made the real one!

So here are the complete ingredients:
1 cup yellow split peas (soaked overnight, then boiled for 20 minutes in high heat)
ground nut oil for sautéing
1 tsp cumin
3 large cloves garlic (minced)
4 dried chillies
knob of butter
1 big red onion (julienned)
2-inch ginger (thinly sliced)
2-inch fresh turmeric (thinly sliced)
1 tsp garam masala
1 tsp ground coriander
3 large salad tomatoes (sliced into small pieces)
1 tin chopped tomatoes
salt & black pepper to taste
fresh coriander to garnish

1. Heat a generous amount of ground nut oil and fry cumin until crackling
2. Add garlic and chillies to saute
3. Add a knob of butter, then the onions
4. When onions turn translucent, add ginger and turmeric
5. Then the garama masala powder and ground coriander
6. Then add the prepared yellow split peas
7. And tomatoes (fresh or tinned or both)
8. When dal turns soft, season with salt and pepper
8. Serve with fresh coriander to garnish (optional)
